Lumbar Disc Arthroplasty
Total disc replacement involves completely removing a severely damaged or diseased disc and replacing it with metal and polyethylene implants. The surgeon will make a small incision in the abdomen and remove not only the disc, but also all diseased cartilage or bone debris from the area. Separating the vertebrae to make room for the prosthesis also relieves the pressure on the pinched nerve. The prosthetic disc is carefully positioned to correct anatomical position.
